Law Firm Directories: Worth the Money?
Several law firm directories, including the two biggies -- FindLaw.com’s and Lawyers.com’s -- claim to help attorneys get new clients. If you purchased a listing for your firm in either of these two directories, or in some other directory, was it worth the money?
• FindLaw.com. The law firm listings at this site are nicely done. Each listing functions much like a mini website and includes information like: a firm’s address and phone number; a graphic, which is often a headshot of a firm’s owner if it’s a solo practice or the firm’s logo; a profile of the firm; a link to its web site; a profile of each attorney working for the firm; and a Contact Us page. Some listings also feature a law firm video and/or links to articles or books written by an attorney with the firm.
• Lawyers.com. The law firm listing information on this site is similar to what is available in a FindLaw listing, but there is less of it per listing. Also, some of the information in a Lawyer.com listing is very crammed together -- the attorney profiles, for example -- so it’s less user friendly.
An interesting feature that distinguishes the listings at this site from those at FindLaw.com is that a law firm's clients as well as the firm’s legal peers can review the firm and its services, and the reviews the firm receives are included in its listing. Also, the firm is assigned two numeric ratings based on its reviews – one for consumer reviews and one for peer reviews. The ratings are prominently displayed, although based on what I saw, most law firms have few if any reviews.
If you used either of these directories, or some other law firm directory, I would love to get your feedback! Your comments can be anonymous. And, if I hear from enough of you, I will blog about what I’ve learned.
